Learning communities are great structures for learning, growth, and support, but facilitating them takes time, attention, and skill. Facilitating a virtual learning community adds a layer of complexity to those skills. We are committed to helping virtual learning community facilitators do their best work through the use of protocols in online settings.
A virtual learning community (VLC) is an online form of a small professional learning community (PLC). Typically consisting of a group of 8–12 people who meet regularly, members of a virtual learning community engage with each other to progress the work of the group and/or the work of group members.
Protocols are conversation structures that help groups work together to examine work, solve a dilemma, learn from texts, and build community. They are timed, facilitated, and aimed at allowing equity of voice for all group members.
We have a new book out entitled Facilitating Virtual Learning Communities: Using Protocols to Improve Educator Practice. While aimed primarily at educators, this book can be of help to anyone who facilitates group work online.
Julie Moore and Natalie Berger have been working together for over 15 years, learning about, facilitating, and researching virtual learning communities using protocols.
We offer a variety of webinars and consulting options for organizations who wish to learn more about facilitating virtual learning communities or who wish to train staff on facilitating virtual learning communities.
